Introduction
DD202 (D216)0
((Economics and Economic Change))
This course, dealing with today’s economic issues and problems, should help we to understand economic debates in the UK and in the global economy. It tackles questions such as: Are we living through a new industrial revolution, led by Information and Communication Technology (ICT)? What makes firms competitive and how can economic policy help? What makes an economy successful in the age of globalization? Do the poor gain from trade in the international economy? What can governments do – do they, for example, really have the will and the capacity to redistribute income? What can be done about unemployment? Is continued economic growth compatible with protection of the environment? Why do economists have such trouble forecasting what will happen in the economy next year?0
The course introduces concepts and techniques of new technology, as well as analysing its effects on the economy, enabling you to see yourself as taking part in economic processes that you are also trying to understand. So the course ‘enacts’ the changes that are taking place, presenting about one-third of its materials through multimedia, so that you can acquire or develop ICT skills.
It is not only economics that are changing. Economic theory is itself responding to the challenge of rapidly moving events. The course looks at a range of approaches, systematically building up an understanding of economic theorizing and offering plenty of opportunities to practice using the ideas, and to think about their application to real problems.
